Lemnos

Lemnos is a beautiful island in the northern Aegean Sea, with a rich history and culture. But it is also a paradise for ecotourists, who can enjoy its diverse natural landscapes and wildlife. Lemnos is also a relatively hidden gem that offers a rich cultural heritage, as well as a more authentic and relaxed character than other popular Greek islands. You can enjoy the pristine beaches, the diverse landscapes, the local cuisine and the ancient history of this island, while respecting the environment and supporting the local communities. Lemnos is a paradise for nature lovers, birdwatchers, hikers, cyclists and sailors, who can explore its beauty and diversity in various ways.

Here are ten examples of activities that you can do on Lemnos to experience its ecotourism potential.

  • Visit the wetlands of Hortarolimni and Aliki. These are two of the most important wetlands in Greece, hosting many rare and endangered bird species, such as flamingos, pelicans, herons, and avocets. You can observe them from observation towers or join guided tours by local experts.
  • Explore the volcanic geology of Lemnos. The island was formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, and you can still see the traces of its fiery past. You can visit the Petrified Forest, where ancient trees were turned into stone by lava flows, or the Cave of Philoctetes, where a mythical hero was bitten by a snake and healed by a volcanic spring.
  • Hike or bike along the trails of Lemnos. The island has a network of trails that connect its villages, beaches, and natural attractions. You can choose from easy to challenging routes, depending on your fitness level and preferences. You will enjoy scenic views of the sea, the mountains, and the countryside, as well as encounter local flora and fauna.
  • Sail around the coast of Lemnos. The island has a coastline of 260 km, with many hidden coves and bays to discover. You can rent a boat or join a sailing tour and admire the beauty of the sea and the shore. You can also stop at some of the smaller islands nearby, such as Agios Efstratios and Kinaros, which have pristine natural environments and rich marine life.
  • Dive into the underwater world of Lemnos. The island has several diving sites that offer a variety of experiences for divers of all levels. You can explore shipwrecks, caves, reefs, and walls, and see colorful fish, corals, sponges, and sea turtles. You can also learn more about the marine ecology and conservation efforts from local instructors and guides.
  • Hike along the trails of Mount Vigla, the highest peak of the island, and enjoy the panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding islands.
  • Visit the ancient ruins of Hephaestia and Poliochni, two of the oldest settlements in Europe, and learn about the history and culture of Lemnos.
  • Join a guided tour of the traditional villages of Lemnos, such as Kaspakas, Kontias and Varos, and discover their unique architecture and local products.
  • Participate in a workshop on organic farming or beekeeping, and taste the delicious honey, cheese and wine produced on the island.
  • Sail around the coast of Lemnos, and admire the scenic coves, caves and beaches. You can also snorkel or dive in the crystal-clear waters and see the rich marine life.
  • Volunteer for a conservation project, such as cleaning the beaches, planting trees or protecting the endangered Mediterranean monk seal.
  • Experience the authentic Greek hospitality by staying in an eco-friendly guesthouse or a traditional stone house. You can also interact with the locals and learn some words in their dialect.
  • Savor the gastronomy of Lemnos, which is based on fresh and organic ingredients. You can try some of the specialties, such as flomaria (handmade pasta), kalathaki (cheese in a basket) and melopita (honey pie).
  • Relax and rejuvenate in the thermal springs of Therma or Kotsinas, which have healing properties for various ailments. You can also visit a spa or a wellness center for some pampering treatments.

Do try to learn about the traditions and customs of the islanders, who are friendly and hospitable, as well as participate in their festivals and events. Lemnos is very much a place where you can reconnect with yourself and with nature, and discover the true essence of Greece.
