Grevena

Grevena is a town in northern Greece that offers a variety of attractions for ecotourists. Surrounded by high mountains, lush forests, and crystal-clear rivers, Grevena is home to the National Park of Valia Calda, a site of exceptional ecological value and biodiversity. Visitors to the Grevena region can certainly enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, rafting, and wildlife watching in a pristine natural environment. Grevena is also known as the mushroom capital of Greece, as it hosts more than 2,500 species of fungi, many of them edible and delicious. Mushroom lovers can join guided tours, visit museums, and taste local dishes made with fresh mushrooms. In a nutshell, Grevena is a destination that combines nature, culture, and gastronomy in a unique way.

Here are ten outdoor and eco-friendly activities that you can enjoy in Grevena:

  • Visit Portitsa Gorge, a stunning canyon with a river and a natural beach. You can swim, hike, or admire the scenery from the stone bridge that crosses the gorge.
  • Ski or snowboard at the National Snow Center Vasilitsas, one of the best ski resorts in Greece. It has slopes for all levels, as well as chalets, equipment rentals, and ski teachers.
  • Explore Pindos National Park, also known as Valia Calda, which means "warm valley". It is a protected area with mountains, forests, rivers, and wildlife. You can trek, camp, or join guided tours.
  • Photograph Aziz Aga Bridge, a historical stone bridge that spans the Venetikos River. It was built in the 18th century by a local ruler and has a unique arch shape.
  • Discover the Garden of Averof in Metsovo, a picturesque village near Grevena. The garden is part of a museum that showcases the culture and history of Metsovo. You can also taste local cheese and wine.
  • Experience nearby Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features rock formations and monasteries. You can climb, bike, or take a train ride around this magical place.
  • Hike Rogovo Ovires Natural Lakes, a series of small lakes that are formed by springs in the mountains. The water is crystal clear and refreshing, and the views are breathtaking.
  • Photograph Vikos Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. It is located in Zagori, a region with traditional stone villages and bridges. You can also raft or kayak in the Voidomatis River that flows through the canyon.
  • Visit the Mushroom Museum in Lavda, a village that is famous for its mushroom production. You can learn about the different types of mushrooms, their uses and benefits, and even taste some mushroom dishes.
  • Enjoy the Bridge of Portitsa Gorge, another beautiful stone bridge that connects two sides of a narrow gorge. You can walk on the bridge or take a boat tour to see the rock formations and waterfalls.
