Nisyros

Nisyros: The Small Island with a Big Green Vision

Nisyros, the small volcanic island located between Kos and Tilos, is not only a peaceful holiday destination but also a shining example of how an island can transition towards a greener way of life.

The island is implementing the ZEN (Zero Emissions Nisyros) program, funded by the European Union. Its goal is to make Nisyros energy clean and emission-free. This will be achieved through solar panels, small-scale wind turbines, battery storage systems and infrastructure that supports essential needs such as water supply, sewage treatment, public buildings and street lighting. Plans also include the introduction of electric vehicles for cleaner transport.

At the same time, events such as the Nisyros Dialogues bring together scientists, academics and stakeholders to discuss issues of green development, sustainability and the future of islands. Nisyros is also part of the GR-eco Islands initiative, which introduces projects like EV charging stations, marine protection measures, hiking trails and sustainable beaches.

For visitors, Nisyros offers an experience that blends nature, culture and authenticity. The most impressive highlight is, of course, the volcano. The Stefanos crater, with its releasing steam from the earth, is a unique spectacle in Greece and attracts daily many visitors. Exploring the wider caldera, with its geological trails and volcanic landscapes, feels like walking through an open-air museum of nature. The Geopark of Nisyros, which is officially listed in UNESCO’s netwrok, gives travelers a deeper understanding of the island’s geological history and volcanic power. You can plan low-impact geotourism tours in Nisyros with Volcano Adventures. Find your tour by contacting them through email.

Beyond the volcano, Nisyros is perfect for ecotourism. It has a network of trails connecting villages such as Mandraki, Emporios and Nikia, passing through traditional olive groves and scenic landscapes. The island’s hot springs offer natural relaxation, while its rich flora and fauna attract nature lovers. Visitors can also participate in local festivals or agricultural activities, experiencing the island’s traditional way of life firsthand.

Nisyros is a unique destination for geotourism and ecotourism: the direct encounter with the volcano, the insight into geological processes and the understanding of how nature shapes life on a small island create an unforgettable experience, unlike anything else in the Aegean. Nisyros is therefore not just a beautiful summer destination, but also a place that educates, inspires and invites travelers to live more consciously. The island is accessible all year round mainly by sea. Since it does not have an airport, the most common way to reach it is by ferry from Piraeus, with routes operating throughout the year, although less frequently in winter (2 to 3 times per week). Alternatively, one can fly to Kos or Rhodes, which have regular flights all year, and then take a local ferry to Nisyros. These ferry routes run on a regular basis and are the most reliable way to reach the island during the winter months.
