Thirasia
Once considered Santorini’s ugly little sister that nobody wanted to visit, the little island of Thirasia is now emerging as a much more authentic and traditional escape, without the mass tourism of adjacent Santorini. Indeed, while Santorini is crowded with tourists and modern amenities, Thirasia preserves its nature, traditions and old-world charm. You’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time as you explore the quaint villages of Thirasia, such as Manolas, Potamos and Agrilia. Each village has its own character and history, and you can admire the whitewashed houses, the colorful doors and windows, and the lovely flowers that decorate them. You can also visit the ancient churches and monasteries that dot the island, such as the Panagia Church and the Monastery of Agia Irini. The wild Mediterranean landscapes of Thirasia are also worth seeing, as they offer many trails and paths that are perfect for biking and hiking. There’s even a small business on the island that offers hiking and e-bike tours. You’ll certainly be admiring the breathtaking views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea, as well as the rich flora and fauna of the island.
Hiking and cycling aside, consider a boat tour around the island and see the impressive volcanic formations and caves. Swim in the crystal-clear waters and relax on the sandy beaches. Try some delicious local dishes and wines at the handful of taverns and cafes that offer a friendly atmosphere and a stunning view. You can also join some cultural events and festivals that celebrate the island's heritage and traditions.
