Choose one of Crete’s four intriguing regions…

The province (nomos) of Rethymnon, is sandwiched between those of Herakleion to its east and Chania to its west. Lacking its own airport, this region is one for the more adventurous traveller. The rolling hills of the Amari valley are ideal for cycling, walking, or just relaxing in a landscape of sumptuous beauty. Gorges cut their way through limestone, before reaching the sea, depositing rainwater in winter and hikers in summer. Mountain villages are fabulous places to escape the heat and see traditional craftwork. And then there’s the towering presence of Psiloritis (Mount Ida), the island’s tallest mountain, which at 2,456 metres above sea level, rises a full three metres higher than that of its nearest rival, Mount Pachnes, in the White Mountain (Lefka Ori) range of Chania. Rethymnon

The eastern quarter of Crete is known as Lasithi (or occasionally Sitia) and is an area of such wide diversity, one could spend months here and still have barely touched the surface of the place. The variety of things to do and places to see is quite incredible, from the lush plateaus of Lasithi and Katharo to the sparkling seas that lap Lasithi's three coastlines. Archaeological sites abound while gorges tear through the predominantly limestone hinterland, affording visitors the opportunity to escape the more beaten track and become one with nature. The birdlife, especially in the more mountainous districts and on the east coast, is superb, and sightings include vultures, eagles and Eleanora's falcons (see Bird Watching). Read more bellow...

Lasithi (Sitia)

The region of Hania encompasses the Western-most part of Crete. Flanked on the North of the island by the electric blue Cretan Sea and on the South by the dark-hued waters of the Libyan Sea, it’s home to two peninsulas, the Bay of Souda, the largest gorge in all of Europe, the fertile Omalos plateau, Gramvousa island, traditional eco-friendly villages, old world taverna’s serving up an array of home-cooked Cretan fare, archaeological sites, caves, endless outdoor activities, and the charming city of Hania – arguably the jewel of the island. Chania

The region of Herakleion (Iraklion) lies between those of Rethymnon, to its west, and Lassithi, to its east. A wildly diverse area, where some of the most spectacular archaeological sites in the world can be found against a backdrop of sparkling seas, and the rugged mountain landscape, of the eastern side of the Psiloritis range (or Mount Ida).
