Socrates Organic Village – Wild Olive
Just above the stunning Missolonghi lagoon on the slopes of Mount Arakinthos, this eco-friendly property offers a myriad of activities such as canoeing and kayaking on the lake, mountain climbing, hiking, kitesurfing, windsurfing, swimming, scuba diving, local cooking, birdwatching and much more.
Once you decide to stay one of Socrates’ five comfy bungalows on the organic farm, you’ll be ready to discover a fascinating part of Greece, complete with lakes, rivers, mountains, sandy beaches, forests and lagoons.
Real food for a change…
Feel like preparing your own healthy meals or would you prefer to dine locally? We recommend both. To begin with, the 10-acre farm is filled with olive trees and a sunny vegetable garden that will contribute to your home-cooked meals and awaken your palate to true Mediterranean cuisine. Every bungalow hides a hefty basket of organic produce from the garden, along with free-range eggs, plus coffee and tea (do try the local “mountain tea” made from local herbs). The village ‘taverna’ in Agrilia also offers great food for lunch and dinner, while the greater area offers many local eateries so you can try fresh food in all its varieties (some of the more exotic fresh tastes in Missolonghi include botargo and eel). The seaside fish ‘taverna’ by the beach of Tourlida is also recommended. Lastly, ask to participate in local cooking lessons!
A modern bungalow full of comforts
These eco-friendly bungalows, which look more like little villas, are quite comfortable. Shower with hydro-massage, furnished terraces with great views, free Wi-fi, DVD and CD player, fully equipped kitchenette, coffee maker and tea kettle, and many other extras ensure a fabulous homely experience. During colder months you’ll also get some wood to cozy up to the fireplace. The bedroom décor with its light colors is particularly soothing.
Unbeatable choice of outdoor activities
On the premises you’ll find a welcoming pool area with umbrellas and sunbeds. An archery corner, children’s playground and on-premises sports opportunities make the place very family friendly too. Free bikes are also available, so are activities such as table tennis and basketball. Worth noting as well is the animal farm that children really love. Kids are allowed to feed the animals or even collect fresh eggs. A short drive away (5 km or 3 miles), the beach of Tourlida reminds you that you’re right on the Mediterranean and free to swim in fabulous waters.
Best of all, you can explore the surrounding nature in numerous eco-friendly ways: hike or climb on Mount Arakinthos, try your hand at traditional fishing in the lagoon, go kitesurfing, windsurfing or sailing in the Patraikos gulf or in other crystal waters nearby. Canoe-kayak and rafting opportunities in the Acheloos and Evinos rivers are definitely worth considering, so is hiking in the protected area known as the National Park of the Mesolongi Lagoon. Just ask your hosts at the Socrates Organic Village to help you set up some of these activities.
Green philosophy
As a member of Ecotourism-Greece.com, the Socrates Organic Village is proud of its green practices. The farm itself boasts the EU organic certification and the environmentally-friendly ISO 14001. Behind the scenes, the 12kW photovoltaic park is feeding the farm with green energy, and so is the solar water heating system. Eco-friendly lighting such as LED and auto on/off mechanisms also contribute to saving energy. On the recycling front there is a waste-management policy to recycle waste to compost organic residues. Lastly, all food comes from the farm itself or from nearby local producers. This is one of the very few green properties in Central Greece, and we appreciate the owner’s efforts in embracing this philosophy!
