Ariana Eco Suites Adults

Sit on your terrace and admire the countryside, count the stars at night, or just laze in the jetted tub during hot island days. We like the idea that the tubs offer ambient water and are not heated, keeping in line with the natural, eco-friendly philosophy.

Also on the eco front, the best part about these gorgeous suites is that they were recently "upcycled" from small local Santorini houses built back in the 1950s. The owners reinforced the original bioclimatic Cycladic architecture with green technology, keeping the heat out in summer and maintaining a cozy vibe in winter, thanks to the pumice stone insulation.

The two suites offer stocked kitchenettes to whip up light meals, fresh salads and fresh fruit platters, all available from the little grocer and market just a couple of minutes away by foot. You'll also get a hearty welcome basket with local products and fruit offered by the management, which has been a highly appreciated favorite according to guest feedback.

An ideal base for ecotourism

It's really great that these suites are in the countryside, surrounded by vineyards and grazing animals, offering a secluded eco-friendly alternative to the heavily visited coastal areas of the island, yet just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Thira. The suites are in an area known as Katikies, which is a good point to start hiking, even all the way to the beach for the more adventurous. The management has partnered with eco-friendly hiking and biking companies on the island, perfect for discovering the island in a soulfully fulfilling way, close to nature.

For those who like the world beneath the sea, the Ariana Eco Suites Adults Only has partnered with Aegean Divers, a great diving company which also does seabed and beach cleaning activities. Staying with the maritime theme, Caldera Yachting offers sailing trips that will awaken the sailor in you and show you, literally, some of the world's most beautiful island landscapes. Guests can also embark on one of the food and wine trips on offer through the management, or enjoy an organic pottery-making experience.

Worth noting as well is the donkey farm where the once tired tourism donkeys have been given a caring home and now form a much more respectful tourism experience in a symbiotic relationship with man. Children would particularly love interacting with these animals. Get in touch with the management for more.

Green practices, health and safety

In keeping with time-tested green traditions, the Ariana Eco Suites Adults Only collects rainwater for use in cleaning and watering plants, an important practice on an island that doesn't have rain. There's a septic tank for wastewater which also respects the environment, along with use of eco-friendly cleaning products and techniques (e.g. vapor and ultraviolet cleaning). The property has been painted with eco-friendly paint too, so you can breathe easy indoors.

Energy is saved thanks to the traditional island architecture, double-glaze windows, LED lighting, low energy consumption equipment, and an effort to save on electricity use. The staff is very aware of the management green philosophy, and last but not least, in light of the Covid-19 recommendations, staff members have also undergone health, hygiene and safety training offered by the Ministry of Tourism. These two friendly suites have got you covered from all angles!

Santorini

Beyond being known as the island of beautiful sunsets, Santorini or Thira today offers much to the eco-visitor, as many hotels have kept the traditional style of architecture without spoiling the surroundings. Read more bellow...

Everything about Santorini revolves around its volcanic nature and crater or caldera, resulting from one of the biggest volcanic eruptions on the planet over 3,500 years ago. Luckily, the volcano is now dormant but it has left its mark on the gleaming charcoal beaches, the fertile soil that grows outstanding wines and a mountainous topography that exudes Mediterranean magic in the middle of the sea. This is a befitting description considering that some experts even believe Santorini might have been no other than ancient Atlantis.

Beyond being known as the island of beautiful sunsets, Santorini or Thira today offers much to the eco-visitor, as many hotels have kept the traditional style of architecture without spoiling the surroundings. Some of these small hotels are transformed villas that make for a delightful stay (See Eco-stay section). On an ecological note, part of Santorini is included in the Natura 2000 network, beginning south of Pirgos to the highest peak of the island and to Mesa Vouno.

Reaching the main town of Fira from the port requires a hike up 588 steps or on the back of a donkey. There's also a funicular for the more lazy, and of course by car. Windmills, arcades and narrow streets characterize Fira, particularly the once upper-crust neighbourhood reserved for the catholic nobility. Further away from the main town the little village of Mesa Gonia features ruins from the 1956 earthquake, as well as restored villas and a winery. The village of Pyrgos is also worthy of attention with its grand villas, Byzantine churches and what's left of a Venetian castle. For a more authentic feel you can venture to Mesaria in the middle of the island, where the noteworthy Argiros estate dates from the 19th century. For a modest beach and small village try Vlichada. With the help of daily excursions, you can cross over to the volcano island and nearby island of Thirasia which boasts less tourists than Santorini.

Overall, Santorini is full of little surprises over and above the obvious delights. You can still see many cave houses around the island, some of which are still inhabited today. For an interesting read, visit the Atlantis Bookstore in Ia, run by an international collective of artists and writers. The Santorini TopoGuide, a fantastic new hiking app, has just been released for Santorini, Cyclades. Great images, wondrus hiking routes, geological curiosities and even roadmaps will guide users on amazing island journeys. www.ecotourism-greece.com is proud to have contributed its insights to this app!
