Kilkis

The Kilkis region in Greece is a treasure trove of natural beauty, biodiversity and ecotourism opportunities. Located in the northern part of the country, bordering Macedonia and Bulgaria, the region boasts a variety of landscapes, from lush forests and wetlands to rocky mountains and caves. The region is home to many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna, such as the Balkan lynx, the golden jackal, the Dalmatian pelican and the orchid Ophrys kilkisensis. The region also has a rich cultural heritage, with ancient monuments, traditional villages and local festivals. Ecotourism is a growing sector in the region, offering visitors the chance to explore the natural wonders and learn about the local culture and history. Some of the popular activities include hiking, biking, birdwatching, kayaking, caving and wildlife photography. The Kilkis region is a perfect destination for nature lovers who want to experience the authentic and diverse beauty of Greece.

Below are some examples of activities in and around Kilkis:

  • Explore the Cave of Agios Georgios, a natural wonder with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and learn about its history and legends from a local guide.
  • Visit the Skra Waterfalls, a scenic spot with crystal clear water and lush vegetation, and enjoy a refreshing swim or a picnic by the stream.
  • Join Greentours, a company that offers e-bike tours around the Kilkis region, and discover hidden gems such as ancient sites, traditional villages and beautiful landscapes.
  • Follow the Goumenissa-Pella Wine Route, a scenic drive that connects small wineries and vineyards, and taste some of the finest wines of Greece along with local delicacies.
  • Relax at the Galazia Limni Skra, a blue lake surrounded by green hills and pine trees, and admire the reflection of the sky on the water surface.
  • Drop by the Balkan Botanic Garden of Kroussia, a unique collection of plants from the Balkan Peninsula and other regions of the world, and learn about their uses and benefits for humans and nature.
  • Visit Lake Doirani, a natural border between Greece and North Macedonia, and enjoy fishing, boating or birdwatching in this rich ecosystem.
  • Trek as well through the Doirani Lake Trail, a scenic route that takes you around the beautiful lake and offers stunning views of the mountains on the border. The trail is easy to moderate and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. It takes about 3 hours to complete and you can start from either Doirani village or Kato Poroia village.
  • Visit the Museum of the First World War and Battle of Skra, a military museum that showcases the history and artifacts of the Balkan Wars and World War I, and pay your respects at the Karasouli Military Cemetery.
  • Visit the Atelier: "Morfi" Antonis Tsolakidis, an art gallery that displays the works of a local artist who creates sculptures from natural materials such as wood, stone and metal.

These are just some of the ecotourism activities that you can enjoy in the Kilkis region. Whether you are looking for adventure, culture or relaxation, you will find something that suits your preferences and expectations. So don't hesitate to visit this amazing destination and discover its natural and cultural treasures!
