Sustainable Trails Through Larissa’s Landscapes

Take on the ultimate adventure by hiking to the summit of Mount Olympus, where rugged trails, breathtaking alpine views, and the spirit of ancient myths combine for an unforgettable and sustainably managed mountain experience.

Embark on one of Greece’s most iconic hiking adventures with a full-day ascent to Mytikas (2,918 m), the legendary throne of the gods.

📍Day Hike to Mount Olympus / Mytikas

Starting from the Spilios Agapitos refuge, the trail winds through dramatic rocky landscapes and steep limestone cliffs, offering a challenging yet unforgettable journey for seasoned hikers seeking a true mountain experience.

What to expect:

• Difficult Trail: A strenuous 8–10 hour round-trip hike that demands solid physical fitness, stamina, and sure-footedness.

• Spectacular Scenery: Towering cliffs, rugged limestone outcrops, and sweeping views over the Aegean Sea and Thessaly’s plains.

• Summit Challenge: A final, basic scrambling section (easy climbing, UIAA I) required to reach the summit and enjoy breathtaking 360° views.

Why it’s sustainable:

• Access is limited to marked trails to minimize environmental impact.

• Visitor numbers are regulated to protect the delicate mountain ecosystems.

• Mount Olympus has been a protected national park since 1938, preserving its natural and cultural heritage.

Explore the mystical alpine world of Mount Olympus by hiking from Petrostrouga Refuge to Apostolidis Refuge, a journey across ancient forests and open highland plateaus.

📍Petrostrouga - Apostolidis Refuge

This route allows hikers to experience the high elevations of Olympus without summiting directly, offering breathtaking views and a deep sense of connection with nature.

What to expect:

• Moderate to Difficult Trail: A steady 3–4 hour climb covering elevations from 1,940 m to 2,760 m, suitable for fit and experienced hikers.

• Alpine Landscapes: Cross through dense black pine forests and emerge into sparse, rocky meadows with ever-widening panoramic vistas.

• Stunning Views: Incredible scenery with commanding views over surrounding peaks, valleys, and the distant Tempi Gorge.

Why it’s sustainable:

• Refuges promote eco-friendly practices in water, energy, and waste management.

• Foot-only access helps preserve the delicate alpine environment.

• Soft tourism initiatives encourage responsible exploration and conservation.

📍Apostolidis Refuge - Mytikas Summit

This thrilling section leads you along narrow ridges and rocky paths, requiring concentration and confidence to stand atop the legendary throne of the gods.

What to expect:

• Technical Ascent: A 1.5–2 hour climb featuring easy scrambling (UIAA grade I), best suited for hikers comfortable with exposed alpine terrain.

• Breathtaking Summit Views: Panoramic vistas stretching over Thessaly, the Aegean coast, and the surrounding Olympus massif.

• Mythical Atmosphere: Feel the powerful spirit of ancient myths come alive as you conquer Greece’s highest point.

Why it’s sustainable:
