Amorgos

A relatively quiet island away from mass tourism, Amorgos was named after a rare herb (locally known as linokalami), which was used to make clothing in ancient times. Its capital or Hora, with cobblestone streets, traditional windmills and whitewashed island houses, was built inland to protect it from pirates.

The northern side of the island around the ancient city of Aegiali with its small gulf features three picturesque towns, in addition to the Kato Meria area with its traditional farming character. Music, dance and cuisine are the modern assets of this little paradise, which also boasts a myriad of historical treasures. Amorgos is renowned for its therapeutic plants and herbs as well. The northeast of the island and the rocky islands of Gramvousa, Mikro Viokastro, Megalo Viokastro, Nikouria and Psalida all belong to the Natura 2000 network.

The ancient city of Minoa with ruins of a stadium, a school and a temple to Dionysus will delight cultural visitors, so will the ruins of ancient Arkesini, monuments from the early and middle Cycladic period, and Venetian fortifications found around the region of Kato Meria. Worth visiting too is the Tower of Agia Triada, a monument of the Hellenistic period built in the 4th century B.C. in ancient Arkesini.
In the 13th century, the Castle that dominates the area was built on a rock by Ieramias Gizis in the middle of an old settlement, complete with walls that feature shooting holes. The Venetian Tower of Gavras from the 16th century is also found in Hora. There’s even a medieval tank at Kato Lakkos that provided water to the town.

Many spectacular events manifest themselves on this island, the most notable being the feast of nougat with honey in august which takes place in the hora, as well as the custom of kapetanios that takes place in the carnival period in lagkada. a custom in amorgos is the traditional wedding. on the evening of june 23, the feast of klidonas (st. john the fortune teller), is celebrated. during the last three years the "documentary days" film festival has been organized during summer with greek and foreign documentaries in collaboration with the international film festival ecocinema and Amorgos Film Club. Finally, during Autumn at the harvest period, a lot of festivities take place mainly concerning music, dance and abundant local wine.
