Native Eco Villas

GREEN PHILOSOPHY

Embracing local architectural tradition and modern eco technology, the three separate villas have preserved the bioclimatic architecture inspired by cave-style dwellings of Santorini. You’ll definitely fall in love with the natural bedding from notable brand Cocomat, nature-based toiletries, indigenous plants on the premises, and the delicious breakfast basket on request with local products. The breakfast basket, by the way, features homemade marmalades (e.g. fig, Santorini tomatoes, Greek strawberry), as well as country eggs along with pastries from the local bakery.

Behind the scenes there are also many green steps that the owners have taken: high-tech insulation, double-glazed windows with wooden frames no less, eco-friendly Jacuzzis with special covers that harvest the heat of the sun and radically reduce heating costs, energy efficient heat pumps and appliances, water aerators, a towel reuse program, and rain collection from the roofs. The last three are essential for an island that doesn’t have much water. The staff even cleans with vinegar rather than caustic cleaners and uses recycled paper when needed. All these and more place these villas among the most environmentally friendly on the island.

ECO CANAVA

The Eco Canava Villa came to life using Greek and local building materials and natural fittings, from wood and sea-grass baskets to linen covers and ecological paint. There’s even an original Santorini wine press that punctuates the minimalist décor (in case you didn’t know, Santorini is famous for its wines). Like in ancient times on the island, this villa has many outdoor seating areas – along with an eco-Jacuzzi – so that you can bask in the sun and enjoy the views. Note the traditional cave architecture of Santorini, which is bioclimatic and keeps the space cool during hot summer months. They villa can sleep up to four and has a kitchenette that overlooks the stunning Santorini caldera.

NATIVE ECO RESIDENCE

This particularly gorgeous villa was once an old island home and has been completely renovated with in an eco-friendly philosophy, giving it a new life and taking advantage of the stunning views of the Aegean Sea. Two bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, connect to a stylish living space with a dining area and a sea-view terrace that also features a Jacuzzi. Throw pillows and linen cushions make the seating area particularly inviting, with lots of sunshine and large windows that afford Caldera views that Santorini is so famous for.

NATIVE ECO VILLA

If you like larger spaces, this two-floor villa with an inside spiral staircase is for you. The four bedrooms, each with their respective bathroom, create the sense of two connected apartments spread evenly across two different floors, complete with their own living rooms and kitchens. Once again, the furniture and fittings have an environmentally friendly flair to them, so does the wooden porch and two eco-Jacuzzis. The larger living-dining area on the lower floor is where both parties can get together for home-made Mediterranean-style meals or cocktails. Noteworthy are the Dali-esque lamps made by a local craftsman. The outstanding sea views add the cherry on the cake!

Santorini

Beyond being known as the island of beautiful sunsets, Santorini or Thira today offers much to the eco-visitor, as many hotels have kept the traditional style of architecture without spoiling the surroundings. Read more bellow...

Everything about Santorini revolves around its volcanic nature and crater or caldera, resulting from one of the biggest volcanic eruptions on the planet over 3,500 years ago. Luckily, the volcano is now dormant but it has left its mark on the gleaming charcoal beaches, the fertile soil that grows outstanding wines and a mountainous topography that exudes Mediterranean magic in the middle of the sea. This is a befitting description considering that some experts even believe Santorini might have been no other than ancient Atlantis.

Beyond being known as the island of beautiful sunsets, Santorini or Thira today offers much to the eco-visitor, as many hotels have kept the traditional style of architecture without spoiling the surroundings. Some of these small hotels are transformed villas that make for a delightful stay (See Eco-stay section). On an ecological note, part of Santorini is included in the Natura 2000 network, beginning south of Pirgos to the highest peak of the island and to Mesa Vouno.

Reaching the main town of Fira from the port requires a hike up 588 steps or on the back of a donkey. There's also a funicular for the more lazy, and of course by car. Windmills, arcades and narrow streets characterize Fira, particularly the once upper-crust neighbourhood reserved for the catholic nobility. Further away from the main town the little village of Mesa Gonia features ruins from the 1956 earthquake, as well as restored villas and a winery. The village of Pyrgos is also worthy of attention with its grand villas, Byzantine churches and what's left of a Venetian castle. For a more authentic feel you can venture to Mesaria in the middle of the island, where the noteworthy Argiros estate dates from the 19th century. For a modest beach and small village try Vlichada. With the help of daily excursions, you can cross over to the volcano island and nearby island of Thirasia which boasts less tourists than Santorini.

Overall, Santorini is full of little surprises over and above the obvious delights. You can still see many cave houses around the island, some of which are still inhabited today. For an interesting read, visit the Atlantis Bookstore in Ia, run by an international collective of artists and writers. The Santorini TopoGuide, a fantastic new hiking app, has just been released for Santorini, Cyclades. Great images, wondrus hiking routes, geological curiosities and even roadmaps will guide users on amazing island journeys. www.ecotourism-greece.com is proud to have contributed its insights to this app!
