Kasos
Kasos: An Island Where Sustainability Meets Eco-Tourism
Kasos, the small southern island of the Dodecanese, has not only preserved its beauty and traditional character but has also embraced a deep ecological philosophy that goes hand in hand with eco-tourism.
The island has joined the European initiative Clean Energy for EU Islands, aiming for an energy transition that will turn Kasos into a model of clean energy. The goal is energy self-sufficiency and the development of an Energy Community, called the “Green Laboratory,” with residents actively participating in the transition.
At the same time, Kasos promotes ecotourism through activities that provide authentic experiences and a connection with local life. Tourists can participate in olive harvesting and production, as well as traditional cooking classes.
The village settlements, such as Fry, Agia Marina, Panagia and Poli, retain their traditional architecture and social cohesion. Visitors can tour old captains’ houses or the Folklore Museum, while also discovering local gastronomy, including handmade pasta, local cheeses and fresh fish.
Picturesque beaches, such as Ammoua, Antiperatos, Emporeios and Armathia, with their clear turquoise waters and rare tranquil atmosphere, provide an ideal setting for an eco-tourism getaway. Many of these beaches are accessible only by hiking or boat, which helps preserve their authenticity and limits mass tourism.
Kasos stands out as a model island: a small community that maintains its identity, respects the environment, inspires through green initiatives, and invites visitors to experience authentic engagement with nature and tradition. It is a perfect example of how island communities can live sustainably while hosting meaningful tourism.
