Kos & Nisyros GeoTour
About 20 km south of Kos island there are a few volcanic islands like Stronyli, Yali and the impressive cone of Nisyros volcano. It is not a volcano like most of the ones we know. There are green forests, valleys and a huge caldera in the center of the island. You’ll get a chance climb old hiking paths to reach mystic valleys with prehistoric sanctuaries and old chapels. The scenic landscape is a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.
This guided tour will let you discover hidden archaeological sites, watch hot volcanic gases, collect rare minerals or take photos of beautiful orchids.
The hiking tour is guided by the experienced German photographer and amateur geologist Tobias, who has been living for many years in Greece. His hiking tours are a good combination of geology, nature and culture. The tour combines Nisyros with its neighbouring island Kos, where most flights arrive. The dates are flexible and the small group size allows a high level of personal service, as well as engaging contact to locals.
- Arrive to Cos island and enjoy a nice evening dinner in Kos downtown.
- Discover the town of Kos and the entire island.
- Sail by ship to Nisyros island with an initial visit around Mandraki.
- Drive to the village of Nikia and visit the volcanological museum. Descend into the caldera with its craters, known as Stefanos and Polyvotis. Return to Mandraki.
- Hike to the Nymphios valley to reach highest peak of the island for barbecue at the scenic “hanging garden of Diavatis”.
- Round tour on Nisyros with a visit to the town of Emporio and Pali harbour. With some luck, we might come across some rare minerals also (spinel, garnet, pyroxene).
- Sail back to Kos island and tour more of the island, depending the arrival time of the ship.
- Transfer to the airport for departure (You can stay longer on Nisyros or Kos, if we’re informed ahead of time).
This tour is organized in spring and late autumn and the group size is about 4-8 people.
This journey includes accommodation in good hotels, half board, transfers, the guide, and any entrance fees. We are happy to help you arrange the flight to Kos and back to your country.
