Windmill Villa
Set on a spectacular spot less than a 10-minute walk from the little town and beach of this lesser known yet impressive Greek island, the Windmill Villa was carefully restored by its owner who is an engineer and enthusiast of historic buildings. Officially, the windmill is considered a heritage monument protected by the Greek Ministry of Culture. It was originally built around 1830 and functioned as a windmill until 1956. Today it is designated as a four-star luxury property that can be rented for one week or more, preserving the exterior and retaining many of the original elements on the interior.
The ground floor of this three-floor tower boasts a cozy living room, a well-stocked kitchen and a bathroom. Head up to the first floor to discover a bedroom with two single beds and small windows out to see, then to the second floor which houses two more beds and another set of windows. The wheel, mechanism and axis of the mill are visible on the second floor and can actually be put into operation if needed!
On the culinary side, the Windmill Villa is perfect for preparing barbecues just above the seashore and having outdoor dinners against the sunset. It's also a few minutes' walk to the area of town with some of the most delicious local seafood taverns.
Food aside, Koufonissi boasts some of the most amazing beaches in the Cyclades, as well as many fantastic diving spots, hiking paths and photo-taking opportunities. You can also take a boat to all the beaches of the island as well as nearby islands such as Glaronisi (Seagull Island) and Kato Koufonisi (Lower Koufonisi) right across the windmill. A visit with to the mysterious and uninhabited island of Keros across Koufonisi can also be arranged, opening up a world of curiosities such as the protected archeological site and an ancient graveyard from Hellenistic times.
Beyond the natural surroundings, the tiny folk museum, organic store and the two or three pubs represent the range of diverse activities that you could enjoy near the villa. Also noteworthy is the Festival of the Fisherman during the end of June and the Feast of the Virgin on August 15, featuring local dancing and music in true Cycladic tradition.
With the seaside Windmill Villa as your base representing an ideal dream home for couples or family to explore the island's beauty, Koufonisi will unveil itself with all its subtle riches. Your island experience – complete with a real windmill – is waiting for you.
