Lithies Houses & Organic Farm
Handed down from generation to generation, the property is today run by Nellos and Fotini who have built these villas with love and respect to the environment, maintain the certified organic farm full of pines, fruit, vegetables and olive trees. The estate, part of the notable EcoZakynthos network, is spread out over 5.5 hectares on green, hilly terrain with 700 olive trees, overlooking the beautiful blue of the Mediterranean.
Indeed, a special advantage is that the property is within walking distance to both popular organized beaches like Banana beach and Agios Nikolaos with water sports options, as well as quieter ones like Plaka Beach. In the vicinity are many other beaches such as Porto Roma, Mavratzi, and Porto Zoro. Another major feature is the traditional open-air restaurant or Taverna and bar on the grounds, where Fotini uses all the organic produce of the land to prepare delicious local food.
You'll be overwhelmed with starters like zucchini balls, cheese pies and eggplant dip, all made with ingredients from the garden. These include potatoes, eggplant, squash, cucumber, peppers, tomatoes, greens, melons, corn on the cob and of course grapes. Don't be surprised to find stuffed rooster on the menu or Fotini's famous rabbit stew (stifado), as well as pork cooked in wine and whole mushrooms. Try the local dessert at the end, Frigania, or the homemade custard pie, Galaktoboureko. If you take a peek into the taverna's interior you'll also be enchanted by the old juke box, ancient radios, piano and other items in the restaurant.
Fotini's kitchen also produces a variety of jams such as plum, sour cherry and pear, while the vineyards yield a robust wine that is worthy of attention, featuring locally grown syrah and cabarnet grapes. This also means that if you cook in your own stone villa, you'll probably get your fair share of organic vegetables and perhaps some delicious olive oil or wine from the farm as well. It is also noteworthy that Lithies is big on using solar energy and recycling waste, including cooking oil!
The serenity of these quiet villas is only punctured by the occasional barking of a dog or bray of a donkey. There are a number of animals around that give it a real Mediterranean farm feeling, including goats, sheep, chickens, a donkey, rabbits, dogs and cats. The sheep produce outstanding local cheese made with olive oil, called ladotiri.
On the inside, the villas offer many modern comforts such as air conditioning, washing machine, fully stocked kitchens and large terraces with sublime views. The architecture is traditional Zakynthian featuring hand-chiseled stone, authentic doors and rare local touches.
Beyond the confines of the farm and apart from the beaches, there's the old 15th century church of the Skopiotissas Virgin, some old venetian estates and an amazing view of Laganas bay from the nearby hill of Kanonia. Needless to say, a visit to the relatively close-by popular area of Laganas, home to the National Sea Park and Caretta Caretta turtle, will not disappoint. Do drop by the Caretta Caretta museum in Dafni as well.
Other possible activities in the region include sailing, diving, hiking and biking. Overall, if you want to live in Mediterranean nature surrounded by many local cuisine options yet still close to the seaside, this certified organic farm (Q-Ways) is an excellent bet.
