Limni
Many people would dream of having their own home on Crete, Greece’s biggest island, known for its sunshine, amazing biodiversity, healthy cuisine, impressive archeological sites, rich traditions, virgin coasts and ecotourism activities. Limni, meaning lake, represents a set of two super eco-friendly maisonettes that can make this dream come true!
Set above the seaside of Ammoudara in Agios Nikolaos, Lasithi, arguably Crete’s most remote and most authentic regions, Limni is run by Kristell, a Franco-Belgian lover of Greece who has decided to make this corner of the island her very own. The property’s two houses, named Marguerite and Mimosa after the flowers and trees of the area, were built using traditional materials (stone, wood and straw) in a holistic manner to accommodate as many as six people each, anytime of the year.
Kristell offers many of the local products available for guests and encourages them to pick fruits, vegetables and herbs from the garden, in true agritourism style. Her love for the region shines brightly when she recommends to guests where to go and what to do, including the numerous outdoor activities available on the property or through friends and partners.
The rooms themselves have a rustic, natural look that works very well with the nature and vibe of Agios Nikolaos, creating the perfect environment and ideal base to explore the island and embark on new eco-adventures. The wooden furniture with just a touch of color here and there, plus the discrete yet plush bedding, are all proof that the less-is-more philosophy makes visitors happy.
ACTIVITIES IN NATURE
Mountain, sea, village and city are all within a few minutes of each other, offering a plethora of activities from this corner of Agios Nikolaos. Take a sailboat out to sea, learn diving, try your hand at Greek cooking, take a yoga class, go on a mountain biking tour or volunteer with an environmental NGO. Beyond enjoying onsite activities such as picking olives, collecting herbs or tending to the garden, Kristell points you in the right direction and help you enjoy this part of Crete with true nature loving insights. Hiking paths, gorgeous views, archeological treasures, unspoiled beaches and rare Mediterranean biodiversity add to the beauty of all these activities. Don’t forget to visit the town’s folklore museum too!
GREEN PHILOSOPHY AT EVERY TURN
Beyond the actual eco-friendly construction of the property and its passive house ideology, Kristell has gone out of her way to introduce one of Greece’s most premium natural bedding brands (Cocomat) to the property, so you can really enjoy your sleep on nature’s bounty. We’re also very happy that the property is off the grid and produces its own energy, thanks to solar panels and a windmill onsite. Natural ventilation replaces the AC, and you can always ask for a small energy-efficient fan if you like.
The property is also very big on saving water on this southern Mediterranean island, from recommending towel reuse to installing high-quality dry toilets. In terms of waste, there are recycling bins on the property, an aversion to plastic and an attitude that avoids generating waste in the first place! The cherry on the cake is that, through its kindly owner, Limni gives back to the community and contributes to a more sustainable local economy. This is one vacation where your carbon footprint is going to be low, you’ll definitely be learning about living green and you’ll have a really great time! We are proud to give Limni our Ecotourism Greece seal!
