Aptera

Within 15 or so kilometres east of Hania lie the remains of the hilltop town of Aptera with its breathtaking panoramic views. A very important archaeological site on Crete, Aptera is now run by the Greek Ministry of Culture, Department of Antiquities.

The impressive Greco-Roman site houses graves, Roman baths, an ancient theatre and the impressive exterior city walls which run approximately 4km. Also excavated were remains of the Temple of Eileithnia, the birth goddess. The site of Aptera is open daily from 8.30 am to 15.00, except on Monday, when it’s closed all day.
