Hundreds of thousands of people visit Santorini every year, but very few know that there is a little island just 10 minutes away by boat that’s virtually untouched by tourism. Here’s a great chance to see the what the “real Santorini” was like a few decades ago, by visiting its little sister called Thirassia. Stroll through its old paths, peek into forgotten cave houses that older Santorini used to build, and see what island life is like without all the shops, restaurants and bars found on the bigger island (there are just a couple of restaurants by the little port).
After a trip by bus to the picturesque little port of Ammoudi below the gorgeous town of Oia, jump on a small boat and sail for just 10 minutes inside Santorini’s famous Caldera to the little port of Korfos and its quiet, lazy beach. Climb 180 steps to the town of Manolas for amazing off-island views of Santorini from another perspective. Relax at the local restaurant/café (or “taverna”) called Panorama, famed for its view, then hike on to a local vineyard and vegetable garden.
A walk through the village will also reveal an abandoned cave house, the island’s little schoolhouse, Church of the Virgin, and more interesting landmarks. The trip’s highlight is the traditional Cycladic lunch served with the local priests’ homemade wine, followed by a trip to the local winery or “Canava”. A quick bus ride and boat ride back to the main island of Santorini mark the end of this adventure.
The price starts from 75€ (per person) for a group of 8 people.
