Start this amazing walk from the northern coast of the island, taking you through olive groves and blossoming gardens up to the small village of Lafionas – built remotely in olden times to avoid pirate raids – on the slopes of Roudi mountain (the name Lafionas comes from Lathionas which in Ancient Greek means “hidden”). Climb up stone paths from the village to enjoy idyllic Mediterranean vistas of the bay of Petra, complete with open seas and tiny coastal islands just off the shore. Visit the old church of Agios Alexandros (Saint Alexander) where the saint’s tomb lies right outside the church doors. Take in the mystical energy and experience the aura of this magical place before heading around Roudi mountain and taking in the various panoramas from all vantage points before reaching Lafionas. Sit down in the traditional café (Kafeneio) to sample the different ‘meze’ tapa-like dishes against a backdrop of mountain and sea. After a bite and rest, head down back to Petra and finish off the tour with a fredo cappuccino or some ouzo on ice in the town’s main square.
