Overview
Hop on our eco-friendly minivan to stumble on a special “Food & Mood” tour in the heart of the Greek capital.
We’ll be starting the day with a Greek coffee and a visit to a patisserie that dates from 1931 and is famed for its quality dairy products. Fresh orange juice is also on the menu, thanks to sweet plump oranges from the nearby Peloponnese. Savory breakfast lovers must try the famed Tiropita or cheese pie, as well as the Spanakopita or spinach pie, shifting to a mouthwatering custard pie or Galaktoboureko after that and possibly some honey donut balls known as Loukoumades. For a healthy yet filling treat, sheep’s yoghurt topped with walnuts and honey is also highly recommended.
A trip to Athens’ oldest indoor food market is next on the menu, with different producers showcasing their meat, poultry and fish (choose any or all). There is a spectacular variety of seafood plucked fresh from the waters of the Aegean. Across the street, in a more open environment, you can marvel at all the fruits and vegetables, with a stop to a herb and spice market that reminds you how Greece is really a bridge between East and West. Consider buying some freshly dried Greek oregano and Greek saffron to take back home with you, ideally with some extra virgin olive oil (our secret elixir for longevity).
Cheeze and meze (appetizers) are next on the itinerary, with favorites such as stuffed vine leaves and tzatziki, the mouthwatering cucumber yogurt dip. Certified wines and liqueurs of origin are also part of this tasting experience, with fine spirits from Greek regions that include Santorini, Mount Olympus, the Peloponnese and Macedonia. After all, the Ancient Greeks did worship Dionysus, god of wine. The tour wraps up with a mouthwatering Gyros or Souvlaki, complete with fluffy pita bread and Tzatziki sauce, at one of the best street food vendors of Athens.
