The Plaka neighborhood, one of the oldest and most picturesque areas of the city, charms visitors with its narrow cobblestone streets, colorful houses and beautiful views of the Acropolis. Plaka has a rich history that dates back to ancient times, when it was the residential area of the Athenian aristocracy. You can still admire some of the elegant mansions that were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, such as the Benizelos Mansion (also known as the Wooden Mansion or House of Saint Philothei).

One of the most fascinating parts of Plaka is Anafiotika, a sub-neighborhood that resembles a Cycladic island. Anafiotika was built by workers from the island of Anafi who came to Athens in the 19th century to work on the construction of King Otto’s palace. They built their houses in the traditional white-washed style of their island, creating a contrast with the urban landscape of Athens. Anafiotika is a hidden gem that’s almost like a Cycladic Island miraculously brought to the heart of the city, and it’s as authentic as can be!

Beyond Anafiotika, Plaka is also home to many attractions that showcase the diverse history and culture of Athens. One of these is the Tower of the Winds, an ancient clock tower that was used to measure time and weather conditions by different civilizations. Another is the Roman Agora, a public square that was built by Julius Caesar and Augustus as a gift to the Athenians. The Roman Agora features a stunning entrance gate called the Gate of Athena Archegetis and a row of shops in an area known as the East Propylon. If you’re in the mood for some shopping, you can browse through the many boutiques that line the cozy streets of Plaka, offering everything from souvenirs and handicrafts to jewelry and fashionable clothing.
