The islands are open on to the Ionian Sea, facing Italy, and have lived under Venetian rule for hundreds of years, plus a few years under British rule as well, before becoming part of Greece in 1864. You can still feel the open-hearted Latin flair of the people, as you admire the different gorgeous landscapes of the area. With Corfu as the main island and official head of the group, the Ionian Islands also include Kefalonia, Ithaki, Zakynthos, Paxoi, Lefkada and Kythira, along with its smaller sister Antikythira. Each has its own beauty, from historic monuments and sacred traditions to stunning nature and traditional villages. The Ionian Islands are ideal for eco-friendly activities such as hiking, biking, snorkelling, diving, sailing and kitesurfing, among many other options.
