Lychnostatis Open-air Museum, Chersonisos

Originally the private collection of Georgios Markakis, this is a museum in which the organically-constructed buildings constitute most of the display.

Built in the traditional way, without the use of bulldozers and using “raw materials” of stone, wood and clay.

This is an interactive museum, wherein viewers are encouraged to touch and feel the ebroidery etc, and smell and taste the herbs etc. on display. A chapel, wine press, olive press, threshing floor, distillery, fruit and herb gardens, are all constituent parts of the museum, which displays practically every feature of everyday Cretan life throughout the centuries. There are free guided tours, on the hour, and if you’ve enjoyed your visit, you may return got free, at a later date using the same ticket.
