Dark past of Distomo

In Karakolithos outside the town of Distomo lies a monument alluding to sombre times, where 134 citizens where executed in April 1944 by the Nazis for their resistance to occupation.

There is also the Distomo Memorial with names of martyrs inscribed on the back, from when the Nazis massacred 218 men, women and children for a partisan attack. Stories remain of a sympathetic German soldier having told children to run away into the fields (the children were later adopted by Swiss German families).

At the entry of Distomo, there also lies a 7-meter sculpture by Georgios Kalakalas, Profesor of the Faculty of Arts of Athens, titled World Kiss. It represents peace and reconciliation between people, particularly the Greeks and Germans of today, whose ties are very strong.
