Cave of Alistrati

One of the biggest caves in Europe and worth seeing for the variety of its breathtaking formations. Located 50 kilometers south of the city of Serres and 6 kilometers from the town of Alistrati, the Alistrati Cave is one of the region’s major attractions.

Mythology has it that this is the cave through which Hades kidnapped Persephone to the underworld. Only reported to authorities and explored in the 1970s, it is now an impressive show cave of the Karst variety. Its great size (a total 3km meters in length, and at points 35 meters high) as well as the age, size and variety of its numerous stalagmites, stalactites, helictites, aragonite crystals and cave corals make it a unique wonder of nature. Well-organized, open all year and wheelchair accessible, though tours are only in Greek, it is off-limits to spelunkers.
