Also known by the Greek words for “new castle”, ‘Kainourio Kastelli’, can be found on the Mesara Plain, close to the Minoan “palace” of Phaistos.
As most castles were built upon the ruins of others, some believe that the nomenclature for this, suggests that the Venetains were the first to build upon this site, though it could also mean that this was the new castle, built upon and older one. Either way, the Venetains didn’t have a great deal of joy protecting it from Cretan revolutionaries, and suffered great losses here, on two separate occasions during the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle’s remains are scant, though some walls and a staircase survive.
