Archaeological Museum of Olympia

Olympia boasts a sophisticated new museum containing some very old pieces indeed. Press the Read More link to discover its riches…

These finds – from the immediate area no doubt – include the stone head of Hera, the victory by Paionios from 421 BC, helmet of the Athenian general Miltiades, Zeus carrying Ganymede, the marbles of Hermes of Praxiteles from 330 BC, sculptures and many other important works. Athletes and their memorabilia also have their place here, needless to say.

There are many notable findings from the Temple of Olympian Zeus (or Temple of Olympiou Dios), as well as prehistoric, archaic and classical pieces in bronze. See the race between Oinomaos and Pelopas with Zeus in the middle, as well as a woman being kidnapped by the Centaurs with Apollo on the scene. This museum will take your imagination to new heights.
