Rhodes, the island and the town, is an open museum, its archaeological finds and sites testament of a history stretching over three thousand years and some.
In antiquity three ancient Dorian cites, Lindos, Ialysos, on the Philerimos (Filerimos) hill and Kamiros, ruled the island of Rhodes. In 480BC they united to establish one stronger central city which quickly gained the reputation as one of the most beautiful cities of ancient times.
Many have mixed feelings about the city now, especially during the busy mid summer season, so avoid those hot packed months because despite its modern development Rhodes still has much to offer.
In ancient times, the island was home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World—the Colossus of Rhodes. Historical sites on the island of Rhodes include the Acropolis of Lindos, the Acropolis of Rhodes, the Temple of Apollo, ancient Ialysos, ancient Kamiros, the Governor’s Palace, Rhodes Old Town (walled medieval city), the Palace of the Grand Masters, Kahal Shalom Synagogue in the Jewish Quarter, the Archeological Museum, the ruins of the castle of Monolithos, the castle of Kritinia and the St. Catherine Hospice.
