Windsurfing is very popular in Rhodes and there are organized facilities of various types around the island with private schools offering wind surfing tuition and kite surfing courses. Good facilities and excellent climatic conditions are found on the west coast, the gulf of Ixia and the beaches of Ialysos. Prassonissi, on the southern tip of the island is considered a surfers paradise and there are several schools and camps in operation at beaches on the east coast.
From April until the end of the summer the winds on the island tend to be in a north-west to west direction, known locally as Meltemi, generally around 12 knots. Other winds are usually fairly stable, in a south to west direction. The gulf of Ixia and the beach of Ialysos are close to the Diagoras International Airport and all types of hotel accommodation are available. For Prassonissi surfers there are traditional villages with rooms to rent and small hotels nearby with the ever increasing new Kiotari area only 10kms away. International windsurfing competitions, formula and free style are organised regularly.
