Monasteries in Epirus (Northwest Greece)
At the foot of Mt. Mitsikeli just 5 kilometres from the city of Ioannina lies this legendary monastery, said to have been built by Dourahan Pasha, leader of the Turkish army. According to the story, there was once only an icon here, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. As the army passed through, Dourahan (whose parents were Christian) lit a candle at the icon and continued towards the city. On the way, the army encountered thick fog and passed unknowingly over the frozen lake and only realized what they had done once they stepped on solid land. The army was victorious in the battle which ensued and Dourahan Pasha returned to the icon and built the monastery in 1435.
