Birdwatching in Herakleion (Crete)

The area of Herakleion has plenty of places to visit for those interested in ornothology. Among these are: Zaros and the Rouvas gorge, the "lake" at Thrapsano and the area around Gouves, especially the Aposelemis river and the lagoons formed in winter.

Common to the area are buzzards, little egrets, blacked-winged stilts, griffon vultures, wheaters, plovers, stonechats, kestrels, herons and in the mountainous regions, occasional glimpses of eagles.

Here’s a list on the birds of Crete and their photos: www.cretewww.com/birds/list.htm
